When can baby sleep with a blanket?

When can baby sleep with a blanket? Practical, science-based guidance — no fluff.

The short answer: 12 months

The American Academy of Pediatrics 2022 update is unambiguous: no loose bedding — blankets, pillows, bumpers, stuffed animals, or sleep positioners — in the crib until at least 12 months. Soft objects in the sleep area are linked with SIDS and accidental suffocation.

What to use instead

Sleep sacks (wearable blankets) are safe at any age. Choose a TOG rating matched to room temperature: 0.5 TOG above 75°F, 1.0 TOG at 69–74°F, 2.5 TOG at 61–68°F. Keep the room at 68–72°F.

After 12 months

Introduce a small, lightweight, breathable blanket. Avoid weighted blankets — they are not safe for children under at least 3 years and even then only with pediatric guidance.

Safe sleep checklist

  • Back to sleep, every sleep
  • Firm, flat surface (no inclined sleepers)
  • Bare crib — fitted sheet only
  • Room-share, not bed-share, for the first 6 months
  • No overheating: feel the back of baby’s neck
⚠️ Every baby is different. Follow sleepy cues. Not medical advice. Consult your pediatrician.
